COLOURlovers - Website Review

http://www.colourlovers.com/

Colour Lovers is a site which contains colour, colour palette and pattern galleries for users to view for inspiration.
Looking at the GUI of the site, I liked its simple neutral colour scheme which does not distract from the actual color swatch galleries. I also liked its soft gradients and subtle highlights which separate elements in the page.
The front page is mostly filled with examples from their colour galleries which immediately generates interest and can get you right into the category you are looking for.

Plantronics - Website Review

http://www.plantronics.com/north_america/en_US/lifestyle/;jsessionid=2NMTE5AQHZ0QWCQBGNYCFFAKAEZW4IV0?WT.svl=leftnav

Plantronics sells headphones and other audio devices. I looked at the Find My Headset section of the site. It takes you through the options of how you want to use your headset in order to find you a product to buy. This is similar to my layout with the progressing navigation down the left side.

Maths Example Game/Website Review

http://www.bbc.co.uk/skillswise/numbers/handlingdata/probability/flash1.shtml

This game asks probability questions and requires the user to input the answer by dragging and dropping numbers into the parts of the fraction.

The layout was initially confusing because the question instruction was somewhere in the centre of the screen. Apart from this it is more standard with the answer box along the bottom and submit button in the right corner.

Educational Software

For the major project I decided to teach some basic maths probability with a flash application.
I decided to include a drag and drop marble exercise and a spinner example as well as an animated slideshow to teach the content.

Initial layout:

Simpsonize Me - Website Review

A fun colourful website which attempts to appeal to a wide audience. Its design uses a lot of bright colours and has a lot of flashy buttons and lights on the 'simpsonizing machine'. This works well to gain attention but it makes working out what is clickable more difficult.

Working through the site is mostly linear and straight forward I found it slightly confusing to work out how far along I was (with the right side bar).

Particle Styles

Layout. The two bars for both the gravity and emit direction were later changed to a 2 dimensional box.

Initial Particle Test

Initial test for particles. Includes changing between two styles and has a clear button. The emitting box is still draggable.

3D Total - Website Review

http://www.3dtotal.com/

3D Total is a website that I visit regularly. It is a site about 3d graphics featuring galleries, tutorials and news. The base layout, design and colors are fine (except of the large orange notice square that appears recently) but the top navigation and title bar remains as a stationary frame when scrolling down and the design disconnects.
Also, the navigation is somewhat lost between two ad bars but the space on right is not utilised at all, at least for larger resolution monitors.

Zen Garden - Website Review

http://www.csszengarden.com/?cssfile=089/089.css

css Zen Garden is a website where designers can create their own CSS designs for the same html website. The website itself explains this and has links to the other CSS designs.

I looked at this one particular design. I liked it because of its colour scheme and layout. I used similar colours to the dark blues and the contrasting orange. I wanted a dark neutral background which would not distract from the particles being generated.
The page is divided into its sections with thin lighter blue borders and soft shadows.

Base Particle System

The particle system used is based on the following tutorial:

A simple particle system using Actionscript 3

From this I added 2 direction gravity and emit direction and the interactivity for the friction, emit direction and gravity parameters.

Box Drag Test

Initial test for draggable box. I was originally going to have patterns following the box similar to Cursorized.

Cursorized! 2 - Flash 'Gadget'

Cursorized! 2 is a flash toy which displays many different and flashy cursor following effects and particle patterns. It contains 100 different colourful and interesting effects and while they may be very impractical, even for desktop cursors they are fun to play around with and look through.

This gave me the initial idea for a draggable box particle emitter.

Website Review - MSY

http://www.msy.com.au/

A terrible website and a terrible interface design.
The front page consists of a large slab of links and highlighted text. There is no hierarchy or focus and this makes it really hard to navigate. The text seems to get larger as you navigate to other pages and the highlighting increases. If you manage to find the price lists they are somewhat usable.
At least the style is consistent across pages.
